ST COLUMBA AND TORPOINT RFC – HISTORY
St Columba and Torpoint RFC was founded in 1927 to supply a ‘rugger’ outlet for young men of Scottish connections. In 1931 players not of Scottish extraction were admitted as long as they were nominated by members of the team.
As the club was of Scottish foundation it was thought that no more apt name could be applied to a pioneer club than that of a pioneer of Scottish history – Columba now known as St Columba. There was no religious significance in the choice.
The club colours are associated with Columba, the royal red because he was an early ruler and the blue was the sea around the island of Iona in Scotland, where he formed the monastery that is now famous. This was in 563 and Columba, blessed with powerful oratory skills, succeeded in reviving Christianity in the Scots. By his death in 597 Columba had succeeded in making Iona the centre of a church that was increasing in size very quickly.
